Contributors to the History of the Walker Mineralogical Club

Charles Michener
Charles Michener is a well known geologist, mineralogist and explorationist. He worked for INCO Ltd. for much of his career and was heavily involved in the discovery of a number of ore bodies that were subsequently brought into production by that company. The mineral Michenerite was named in his honour. Dr. Michener is highly respected by members of the Walker Mineralogical Club and participates regularly. In 1994, he was made an Honorary Member of the Walker Club as well as elected to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Professor Ferguson
Professor Ferguson is a respected mineralogist in international mineralogy and is well loved by the many students he has influenced over the years. The mineral bobfergusonite was named in his honour. Prof. Ferguson is Professor Emeritus of Mineralogy in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Manitoba.

Donald “Digger” Gorman
Donald “Digger” Gorman has been a long-time member of the Walker Club and is now its Honourary President. His years at the University of Toronto and his consulting expertise have made him well known in geological and mineralogical circles. The mineral, gormanite, was named in his honour. His contributions to the club in time and knowledge in terms of talks, workshops and field trips over many years are unique and have been greatly appreciated by generations of Walker Club members.

Dr. Peter von Bitter
Dr. Peter von Bitter is Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Royal Ontario Museum and Prof. of Geology at the University of Toronto. He was named a Benefactor of the ROM in 1985 when he donated his outstanding collection of radioactive and rare earth minerals to the ROM’s Department of Mineralogy.

Cynthia Peat
Cynthia Peat (1925-1999) was a long time member of the Walker Club and is well known in North American and British Mineralogical circles. Besides being an excellent amateur mineralogist, she worked at the Royal Ontario Museum for many years as X-ray technician and curatorial assistant.

Bev and Mars Mikell
Bev and Mars Mikell have been stalwarts at the Walker Club for two decades. They have held many positions on Council and have helped organize many field trips and events. Their knowledge of Canadian collecting localities and their professionalism are highly respected by both professional and amateur mineralogists.

Tony Steede
Tony Steede is an amateur mineral collector of high caliber. His travels in search of minerals have been extensive and his study of mineralogy is constant. Tony has contributed to the Walker Club in many ways over the years and has served on Council in all positions. His counsel on matters of importance to the club is of importance at all meetings.

Dave Joyce
Dave Joyce has collected minerals since his pre-teen days. His interest led him to a career in mining. Since graduating from the Haileybury School of Mines, he has been employed in various positions at ICI Explosives and has been involved with mines all over North and South America. His travels in business and in pursuit of his mineralogical interests have enabled him to build a significant collection of minerals particularly rich in Canadian localities.
